Study and discussion of the humanities has traditionally been the keystone to understanding why cultures and people behave as they do and in informing policy decisions. The humanities have helped us ask and answer questions about our world and existence itself. The value of the knowledge contained within these disciplines has been indispensable to mankind.
However, in recent decades the study of these areas has fallen into a category of superfluous. Hard sciences and business acumen are valued over academic discussions about the nature of existence or rights or the condition of man.
Mankind sits on the precipice of monumental transformational change – the sort we have never faced before. Technology, within the next two decades, will fundamentally alter all aspects of life, government, our expectations of privacy, community and perhaps notions of existence and consciousness as well.
Science and engineering have and are crafting miraculous wonders in terms of artificial intelligence, genetics and others but science has failed, because it is ill-equipped for the task, to account for humanity.
There has never been a more important time to step back and look at first principles of moral law and the current and desired condition of humans. The disciplines of the humanities are the link that will enable us to transition into the future digital state post-postmodernity and retain our humanity.
